History
Due to ethnic riot emerging in the Mumbai City then Inspector General of Police (Now Director General of Police), Mumbai decided to form State Reserve Police Force in the Mumbai range with concurrence of former Chief Minister Shri. B. G. Kher and Home Minster Shri. Morarji Desai. Accordingly an order had been passed vide Government Resolution No. Home Department / 3969 / 5 / C-1486, Date 06th March 1948 to establish Reserve Police Force in Mumbai. This force was named as Provincial Reserve Constabulary (PRC). The State Reserve Police Force was raised on 6th March, 1948 as a Special Armed Police Force for the State of Maharashtra & popularly known as SRPF. In order to make Maharashtra self sufficient in Internal Security, two units were raised at Purandar (Pune) and Sambra (Belgaon, Karnataka). The force was firstly marched at Hyderabad in 1950 for maintaining control over the ethinc riot as its first operation. On returning from Hyderabad after two years of campaign the head quarter was shifted to Military Barrack at Daund from Purandar. In August 1958 the permanent head quarter of SRPF was established at Ramtekdi, Pune. Till date the SRPF Police Force has not only served in the Maharshtra State but also had campaigned in the various states in India. (Viz. Kashmir, Assam, Nagaland, Imphal, Miszoram, China Border, Kach War Filed at Gujarat, Goa, Diu & Daman, Hyderabad, Madras, Bihar, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Madhya Pradesh, etc.) The force has successfully served as an important Police Force in tough situations. This is 1st Group established in Maharashtra and has its own Importance as Flagship Group. Various important trainings are being given to Police Officer & men of Maharashtra State.
